Topaz

Height: 7 mm. Topaz associated with zinnwaldite. The transparent part with a vitreous luster is a part of a prismatic crystal of topaz. The tabular pale brown crystal at the bottom of topaz is zinnwaldite.

Recovered from an REE Miarolitic pegmatite in S-type (Ilumenite-series) granite. Formed in the Late Cretaceous (70 Ma).

The first topaz from Japan was reported from this location in 1877, and topaz from this location was designated the prefectural mineral of Shiga in 2016 by the Geological Society of Japan.
