Spessartine
Konaka, Azuma village, Midori city, Gunma pref., Japan
Field of view: 5 mm. Spessartine associated with rhodonite. There are two modes of spessartine occurrence: The sharp transparent trapezohedral crystals and loose opaque white crystals. The origin of these differences of appearance is not specified. The surrounding pale pink host is rhodonite. The black parts are manganese dioxide formed by weathering.
Recovered from a chert-hosted bedded manganese deposit subjected to Hornblende-hornfels facies contact metamorphism.
Spessartine from this location was described in 1957.
