Trench, Trough
Deep sea
Overview
A sedimentary system composed of a series of sedimentary facies in subduction zones of plates at active continental margins. Trench is defined generally as those deeper than 6,000 m, whereas trough is shallower than 6,000 m. Forearc basins are developed at the inner trench slopes.
Schematic diagram of trench and trough. Forearc basins are at the middle of inner trench slope.
Sedimentary facies
- Submarine landslide (Olistostrome)
- Deep-sea tsunami
- Upper inner trench slope
- Forearc basin
- Lower inner trench slope
- Trench floor
- Outer trench slope
