Pyrochroite
Kamibishi, Hishi village, Kiryu city, Gunma pref., Japan
Source for manganese
Field of view: 30mm. Pyrochroite associated with hausmannite. The massive group of reddish-brown powder at the bottom is aggregate of fine pyrochroite crystals. The massive dark brown part at the right is aggregate of fine hausmannite crystals. The massive grayish-green part at the left of pyrochroite is aggregate of fine tephroite crystals. The black crusts on the surface of the specimen are manganese dioxide formed by weathering.
Recovered from a chert-hosted bedded manganese deposit subjected to Albite-Epidote-hornfels facies contact metamorphism.
Pyrochroite from this location was described in 1980.
