Sulphur

Iwo Jima

Iwo Jima, Ogasawara city, Tokyo, Japan

Source for sulphur and Sulphuric acid

Sulphur

Field of view: 30 mm. A group of sulphur. The quadrangular transparent yellow pyramids are sulphur. There are a few large steps on the crystal faces. The earthy white parts associated with sulphur are probably alunogen.

Recovered from an active fumarole of a volcano in an oceanic arc. Formed in less than a year.

Sulphur from this location was described in 1891.

Sulphur was formed by reacting H2S in volcanic gas with O2 in air:

2H2S + 3O2 = 2H2O + 2SO2

SO2 + 2H2S = 3S (Sulphur) + 2H2O
