- [ Etymology ] melano + crater in Latin (black + bowl)
- The flowering size of Tillandsia tricolor is more than 25 cm, whereas that of Tillandsia melanocrater is smaller and less than 25 cm.
- Tillandsia tricolor distributes at altitudes of 750 m or higher, whereas Tillandsia melanocrater distributes at 50 m or lower.
- The inflorescence is not branched.
- Most of the plant sold as Tillandsia tricolor is Tillandsia melanocrater.
