Iwo Jima Seashore
Iwo Jima, Ogasawara city, Tokyo, Japan
Same locality: Iwo Jima
Occurrence
Crystals at the beach of Iwo Jima. This specimen has been referred to as crystal lapilli but it looks as phenocrysts dispatched by weathering from a glassy matrix of the andesitic intrusive rock (Motoyama dike). Iwo Jima is a volcano of the oceanic arc, the Izu-Bonin-Mariana Arc, and is composed of andesite. Andesine-glass groups well rounded at the seashore have been called "Uzura-ishi", egg of Japanese quail, by local people as its texture is similar to the egg.
