Occurrence
Crystal lapilli of augite associated with basaltic andesite erupted from the Umanose Caldera of Zao Volcano in the Late Pleistocene (30 ka). Zao Volcano is an active volcano, and has been active since the early Pleistocene (1 Ma). The age of eruption was determined by radiocarbon dating.

Augite crystal lapilli erupted from the Umanose caldera. Black prisms are augite. The brown to reddish-brown lapilli are basaltic andesite.
