Stratiform Magmatic Deposit
Chemical Process (Liquid-phase Growth) - Closed system under ground (Melt precipitation)
Synonym
Orthomagmatic Deposit, Stratiform chromitite, Stratiform chromite deposit
Required Geological Setting
Occurrence
Chromite deposits accumulated from tholeiitic basalt melt in continental magma chambers. Hosts of the deposit are harzburgites, pyroxenites or anorthosites. Deposits are composed of thin ores a few cm in thickness and are very contineous. Boundaries between depostis and hosts are gradual. It is considered that deposits were formed in magma chambers by the reaction of tholeiitic basaltic melt with granitic melt produced by melting of lower crusts.
