Ilmenite

Field of view: 5 mm. Ilmenite associated with cristobalite. The 3 hexagonal tabular black crystals are ilmenite exhibiting striations. The surrounding opaque white grains are cristobalite. The translucent white grain at the upper right and the fine white grains on the basement are labradorite.
Recovered from basalt erupted from a monogenetic volcano in an island arc. Formed in the Late Pleistoene (0.1 Ma).
Ilmenite from this location was described in 1982.
