Producing Magnesium (Mg)

Mg: Magnesium

Black (UK) discovered and Davy (UK) separated in 1766.

Abundance: 2.76%(in the earth's crust), 1.3g/litter (in the sea water)

Method 1

Heat calcite.

CaCO3 right CaO + CO2 right

down

Mix produced quick lime with sand and water.

CaO + H2O right Ca(OH)2

down

Add calcium hydroxide into sea water to lower pH.

Ca(OH)2 + MgCl2(in sea water) right CaCl2 + Mg(OH)2 right

down

Separate milky white deposit, and solve in hydrochloric acid.

Mg(OH)2 + 2HCl right MgCl2 + 2H2O

down

Dry, melt over 714 Cersius, and apply electrodialysis.

MgCl2 right Mg + Cl2 right

Method 2

Bake siderite.

MgCO3 right MgO + CO2 right

down

Mix it with alloy of Si and Fe, and heat in vacuum over 1200 Cersius.

2MgO + Si right SiO2 + Mg right

3MgO + 2Fe right Fe2O3 + 3Mg right

down

Trap distillated Mg.
