Tillandsia exserta

September 12th, 2023

The flowering period was 24 days in September. Dark violet tube flowers with 3 petals whose tips are reflexing outside. The bottom side of the petals are white. 6 stamens and a pistil are sticked out of petals 9 - 13 mm and 16 mm, respectively. The tube flowers are 20 mm long. A flower blooms for a day. The inflorescence is composed of a main spike and 3 side spikes. 7 flowers bloomed from the bottom side of the main spike at intervals of 2 - 4 days. 5 - 6 flowers bloomed from the bottom side of the 3 side spike at intervals of 2 - 4 days. The side spikes began to bloom 6 - 11 days later. Note that red pointed sepals are exserted 6 mm from the flower bracts prior to blooming. The plant name, exserta, was named after this characteristic observation.
