Occurrence

I-type (Magnetite-series) skarn

Skarn formed by early Paleocene (65 Ma) Akakuradani Granite intruded in Kawaba Metamorphic rocks of Katashina Belt. The Akakuradani Granite is I-type (Magnetite-series) and is approximately 1.5 km apart from the mine. Limestone, the host of the skarn, is a member of Kawaba Metamorphic rocks. Age of granite was determined by K-Ar radiometric dating.

Kawaba Mine

Outcrop of garnet skarn inKawaba Metamorphic rocks. The outcrop is mainly composed of andradite with a small amount of epidote. The prismatic black crystals in this photograph are hedenbergite. The surrounding host is composed of massive andradite. Fibrous ferro-ferri-hornblende is associated with andradite.
